Hub Theatre Group is pleased to announce its production of Scottish playwright David Harrower's Blackbird, winner of the Laurence Olivier Award in London for Best New Play in 2007. The play marks the Hub directorial debut of award winning director, Paula Chanda. Bob Chanda will play Ray and Melissa Miller will play Una.

Ray is a 55 year old man that is approached by a 27 year old woman at his place of work. This is not a random encounter and we learn that many years earlier when the woman was a young minor, the man had committed sexual acts with her for which he was sent to jail. During the course of the play they relive that shared experience in a surprising, difficult and intense narrative that never let's the audience off the hook or indulges in easy answers.

This play is controversial and as such fits into the mission of Hub Theatre Group to focus on theatre that exposes the human condition. This play has been described in reviews with terms such as "anguished" and "harrowing" and addresses the topic of sexual abuse in an uncompromising fashion giving us uncomfortable moments of insight into these two people and the awful truths that bind them together. In some senses, the play strips away our black and white veneer of understanding and forces us to accept that tragic circumstances often come into being where and how we least expect them.

We hope the play, and the conversations and education we hope to nurture around the play will bring light to a problem that is all too pervasive in our society (Please stay tuned for information about possible talk backs and panel discussions).

In the end, Harrower's piece is an entertaining and important piece of theatre and we hope you will join us for our performances.

This play has mature themes with sexual dialogue. We encourage as many people to see this play as possible, but are sensitive to the fact that for some, what they may see mirrors experiences from their past and may act as a trigger. Both I and Director Paula Chanda are available to anyone that wants to discuss the play or seek information prior to attending a performance to make an informed decision. Please call or email us.

We hope you will join us for performances at the All Saints School BLACK BOX THEATRE at 3222 103rd Street, Lubbock, Texas with a sneak peek performance Thursday September 7 at 7pm and performances at 7:30 on Friday, September 8th; Saturday September 9th; Friday September 15th; Saturday September 16 and a matinee performance at 2 pm on Saturday September 16.
